Great rooms came into vogue in the 1990s, when formal living rooms were considered passé. Inspired by Medieval Great Halls, the concept was to combine the functions of living rooms, family rooms, and studies into one “great” room.

Typically, great rooms are centrally located; a kind of crossroads for the home ideal for entertaining since they’re adjacent to the kitchen and dining room. Other features include: high cathedral ceilings, walls of windows with panoramic views of woods beyond, stone fireplaces, multiple seating areas, and built-in entertainment centers. In a multi-story home, the great room will be overlooked by an upstairs hallway or a balcony.

The majority of Commonwealth’s whole house remodel projects include the reconfiguration of smaller living spaces into a stately great room and/or the modernization of an existing great room.
