Home Remodeling Project Overview

In 2014, our clients purchased a newly built home in the charming Town of Vienna, VA, which has experienced many similar transformations as aging homes are torn down and new structures built in this highly desirable area. The home, although modern, lacked the personalized touch our clients desired, driving them to envision a renovation that would harmonize with their second residence in North Carolina and accommodate their bi-state lifestyle split between the two homes.

Remodeling Design Objectives

The primary aim was to infuse the Vienna home with a custom kitchen that resonated with the design sensibilities of their North Carolina residence. Our clients envisioned a functional new space that reflects precise attention to detail, specifically in its color schemes and alignment of fixtures. Additionally, enhancing connectivity within the home and improving outdoor living areas were key components of the redesign.

Custom Kitchen Redesign

  • Monochromatic Theme: The kitchen was transformed with a monochromatic color scheme designed to ensure a cohesive aesthetic.
  • Centered Design Elements: Precision was paramount, with the island, pendant lights, and range aligned for a harmonious visual flow.
  • Custom Features: A standout feature is the custom Venetian plaster oven hood, paired with strategically placed windows beside it to capture the afternoon sunlight, enhancing the natural ambiance of the kitchen.
  • Built-In Style Refrigeration: The refrigerator and its surrounding cabinets were redesigned as a single unit to achieve a built-in look that embodies the kitchen’s custom feel.
  • Functional Connectivity: A doorway was introduced between the dining room and kitchen, an element initially overlooked in the original build that improved the flow between spaces.
  • Kitchen Pantry Expansion: The pantry was expanded and reconfigured, now featuring a counter space and modern shelving, enhancing functionality.

Screened Porch Addition

  • Opening Views and Outdoor Access: In place of a traditional kitchen table area, an accordion-style bank of glass doors was installed to facilitate an unimpaired transition to the newly minted contemporary screened porch, elevating the home’s indoor/outdoor living experience.
  • Elevated Areas: Structured as a secondary living room, the porch is anchored by a contemporary linear gas fireplace with a custom-made cast concrete mantle.
  • Simplicity in Style: The architectural design celebrates clean lines and minimal framing to maximize the visual and literal entry of the outdoors.
  • Added Outdoor Enjoyment: Underneath the screened porch, additional living space is carved out and covered in pavers, perfect for shaded outdoor relaxation.

Additional Upgrades

  • The family room fireplace received a modern uplift with a new mantle and vertical nickel-gap facing, enhancing its visual appeal and texture.
  • The powder room and several other bathrooms were selectively remodeled, receiving necessary upgrades while retaining their original layouts.
  • Craftsman-style stair rails were replaced for a more modern, sleek, and clean look.
  • Traditional brown wood flooring was replaced with a wider plank and treated and finished in a very light, translucent blush white.
  • The basement bar cabinets were painted, and other fixtures, such as the countertops, lighting, faucets, and handles/pulls, were replaced.
