Enhance Your Home with an In-Law Suite for Multigenerational Living
At Commonwealth Home Design, we leverage our nearly 40 years of experience building additions and remodeling whole houses across Northern Virginia to accommodate in-law suites. We specialize in creating custom in-law suites that cater to the needs of multigenerational living. Our expertise ensures that these spaces are functional and aesthetically pleasing, enhancing your home’s value and usability.
Reconfigurations & Home Additions for Custom In-Law Suites
We have successfully completed numerous in-law suite projects, each tailored to the unique needs of our clients. Below are some highlights of our work:
Vienna/Oakton, VA: Transforming a 1970s Home
For a contemporary 1970s house, we accommodated parents who returned from Arizona. The existing detached garage was connected to the house, creating a first-floor in-law suite. We also upgraded the owner’s primary suite (formerly referred to in the industry as a master suite), provided a music studio/workspace, and ensured privacy through direct access from the garage.
Fairfax Station, VA: Designing for Special Needs
A suite was crafted to ensure comfort and quiet for an adult child with Autism Spectrum Disorder who benefits from the support of remaining close to family.
Ashburn, VA: A Light-Filled Suite for a Handicapped Sibling
We designed and built a bright, airy suite on the main floor rear that provides ease of movement and independence for a handicapped sibling.
Vienna, VA: In-Law Suite Designed for Stroke Recovery
We added an extension to a beautiful brick house for a mother who had a stroke and was in assisted living. The addition was conceived during COVID quarantine but was planned as a permanent solution. It was designed as a primary suite so that the owners are well-prepared for aging in place in the future, should they so choose. Read full story.
Great Falls, VA: Reconfiguring a Split-Level for Eldercare
When it became clear that an elderly father could no longer live independently, a thoughtful and comprehensive solution was needed. The existing home was a split-level design, where the lower level was just 3 or 4 steps down from the main floor and had a walk-out to the backyard. To accommodate the father’s needs, we extended the rear of the house, structurally supporting the upper floor to allow for the removal of the existing rear wall. This structural adjustment enabled the expansion and complete reconfiguration of the existing room. Additionally, we created a small outdoor area for him to enjoy the sunshine, which seamlessly connects to the existing deck, patio, and pool, providing a comfortable and accessible environment.
Vienna, VA: Full Basement Remodel for Visiting Parents
Parents visiting from out of state were accommodated in a redesigned full basement, including an in-law bedroom, shared bathroom, table area, sitting/gaming/play area, and an exercise room – all of which are well-utilized by the family when the house guests return home. Subsequently, we remodeled the main floor, kitchen, and primary suite of the homeowner’s main residence.
Vienna, VA: Aging in Place with a Custom Main Level Suite
We helped a local bank owner and his wife plan for aging in place by designing and building a custom, full suite on the main level, anticipating future needs. Planning ahead like this allows them the peace of mind and flexibility to remain in their home should their needs change suddenly.
Arlington, VA: Combining Finances for Custom In-Law Suite
We designed a suite incorporating a bedroom, bathroom, living room area, and kitchenette for a mother-in-law who combined finances with the children/primary homeowners.
Oakton, VA: Accessible Living Addition for Elderly Parent
When a 90+-year-old father could no longer live on his own, we designed and built a thoughtful main-floor addition to the right side of the home. This addition features a spacious combined living room and bedroom area, a generously sized bathroom that is largely handicap accessible, and a large walk-in closet. The design also includes forward-thinking elements so that the space can easily be converted into the main floor primary suite for the homeowners in the future.
Great Falls, VA: Future-Proof In-Law Suite Design
In the planning stages, this project involves creating a main-floor in-law suite for both parents that will eventually serve as the primary suite for the homeowner.
